Transport Paralyzed As Heavy Rains Destroy Hamurwa Bridge

Tai Ramadhan, Rubanda District Police Commander says that they have resolved to stop people from using the Hamurwa-Kanungu road after realizing that floods have increased and could cause risk to the users.

Transport has been paralysed following the flooding of Hamurwa Bridge in Hamurwa Sub County, Rubanda district.

This follows frequent heavy rains that have hit Kigezi sub-region.

Tai Ramadhan, Rubanda District Police Commander says that they have resolved to stop people from using the Hamurwa-Kanungu road after realizing that floods have increased and could cause risk to the users.

Ramadhan says that rains which led to the flooding of the bridge hit the area in the last two days.

In October two people died and three others injured when an Isuzu ELF truck registration number UBE 344D that was transporting traders and goods from Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu district to Karukara market in Rubanda district got stuck while crossing Hamurwa bridge.

According to Ramadhan motorists have been advised to can use the alternative route of Nyamasizi- Kitagata- Kerere road in Rubanda.

Fred Turyamureeba, a resident of Sheyeba in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda district blames Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) for failure to rehabilitate the bridge.

Turyamureeba says that UNRA should consider Hamurwa floating bridge an emergency and construct a modern bridge to ease transport to and from Kanungu.

Augustine Kabanda, the UNRA Kabale branch manager says that a team of engineers has been sent to access the damage.

By Monday evening seven vehicles that were heading to Kabale from Kanungu were stuck at the bridge.
