Trial of Suspected German Paedophile Starts Today

The trial of Kalangala Based German suspected Paedophile, Bernhard Glanser Berry starts today at Masaka High Court.

Bernhard Glanser Berry was in April committed to the High Court by Masaka Chief Magistrate Deogratius Ssejemba to face 28 counts of defilement and child trafficking.    

Glanser, the Director of Ssese Humanitarian Service, an NGO located in Mwena landing site in Kalangala district is facing 8 charges of aggravated defilement and 19 counts of aggravated child trafficking.  

Records before court indicate that in 2007 and in November 2013 at Mwena Landing site in Kalangala district Glanser abused the power and authority he had over the minors that were under his care and sexually assaulted them.  

On Wednesday, the Masaka Regional State Attorney Aisha Naluze told Masaka High court judge Justice Dr Winfred Nabisinde that investigations into the matter are complete and prosecution is ready to proceed with the trial.

“We are ready to proceed with hearing of the case and ready to provide the defense with full disclosure of our case if court grants us an opportunity so that we can have an expeditious trial of this case” Naluze added.

Justice Nabisinde said that due to the urgency of the case its hearing can be fixed in the on-going criminal session since state is ready to proceed with the case.

“Court had to weigh the arguments of the two parties and since there is no legal issue that bars this case to be fixed in the on-going criminal session I hereby order the prosecution to complete its disclosure of its case, to the defense team”, she said.

Justice Nabisinde also ordered state to prepare its witnesses so that trial can kick off.
