Two Arrested for Alleged Rape, Murder in Kotido

Police in Kotido district have arrested two people for the rape and murder of a 30-year-old woman.    The suspects arrested are Mario Ezekiel aged 25, a bar attendant, and Denis Okeng Longoli aged 31. 

The incident occurred on Thursday in Watakawu trading centre, Nakapelimoru town board. It is alleged that the deceased identified as Rose Mary Poo was persuaded from Pioneer Pub and taken to a nearby home where she was raped before being strangled to death.

Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson said that the two suspects will aid in the investigation of the matter.   Longole said that the police also recovered used condoms from the scene and extracted vaginal swabs for analysis.

The incident highlights the alarming rate of sexual violence in Uganda, with 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experiencing sexual violence. The Ugandan Penal Code Act defines rape as having unlawful sexual intercourse with a person without their consent, punishable by death upon conviction.

In a related development, Joint Security Forces have recovered a Gun from a Karamojong warrior during an operation in the Moroto district.

The security forces successfully recovered an AK-47 riffle registration number 18530(BC) and 05 rounds of ammunition in an operation that was conducted on Thursday afternoon in Kopooi village in the Loputuk sub-county. The operation also led to the arrest of Emmanuel Lotimong the owner of the gun.

Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident stating the suspect is already in custody.

"The successful recovery of this firearm is a testament to the commitment of our security forces to disarmament efforts in the region. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our communities" Longole reiterated.
