Two Arrested for Conning Women With Promises to Meet Museveni

At least 150 small scale business women in Mbale’s industrial division in Mbale Municipality have been conned of 6 million shillings by their fellow members promising them audience with President Museveni at his country home in Rwakitura.

The suspects who police identified as Teddy Birungi and Fatuma Mubiru reportedly convinced other women in the area.

 

Janet Lusinziro, one of the victims says that Birungi approached her with the idea of meeting the president to open for them a SACCO and that if she wanted to be a member; she needed to pay Shs 45,000. She handed over this money. 

 

Lusinziro says having seen Birungi active in NRM politics in industrial division; she believed Birungi had the contacts to meet President Museveni.

 

Lusinziro says that after waiting three months, she began to suspect they had been conned. With other women who had been conned, she then alerted the police who arrested them.

 

The Elgon regional police Commander Jacob Opolot has confirmed the arrests.

 

Shaban Kachimete, the Mbale RDC, says the two women should also be charged with bringing the president's name into disrepute since he does not charge money for people to meet him.
