Two suspects are in police custody in Koboko district on charges of illegal possession of firearms. The suspects have been identified as Zubeda Gisima, a businesswoman and resident of Nyelwa village, Midia sub-county in Koboko District, and Francis Chandiga, a South Sudanese refugee.

They were picked up on Wednesday during an intelligence-led operation conducted by a joint team comprising police officers, the GISO of Midia Sub-county in Koboko, and local council officials (LCs) from the area. According to Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Region Police Public Relations Officer, the items seized included “… a pistol with serial number T6115138 but without a magazine, seventy-eight live rounds of ammunition for an SMG Rifle, a green plastic army bottle, and six MTN SIM cards.”

Angucia explained that these items were discovered in one of the rental rooms belonging to Gisima. The room had been rented by the prime suspect, identified only as Ivan, who had stayed for two weeks before disappearing to an undisclosed location.

The suspects, along with the recovered items, are currently at Koboko Central Police Station while investigations into the matter continue under Koboko SD reference 33/25/10/2023. Brani Acikule, the LC 3 chairperson of Midia sub-county, has urged residents to remain vigilant. He noted that some criminals take advantage of the peri-urban location of the sub-county to seek refuge.

This marks the second instance in which the police in Koboko district have recovered illegal firearms within the past six months. In April of this year, the police recovered two illegal guns and arrested two assailants suspected of terrorizing residents in the recent past.
