Rodgers Mpande Byamukama, the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party candidates for the Mparo Town council LC III chairperson seat in Rukiga district is nursing injuries at Mparo Health Center IV following an attack last night.
Byamukama was reportedly thumped by his National Resistance Movement- NRM party rival, Jimmy Kawaida at Kihanga playground in Katungu village in Mparo ward at around 12am on Tuesday.
He was returning home in Kanyweero cell in Sindi ward in the company of his political assistant, Witness Ngabirano alias Ndugu. The duo was coming from the residence of Jack Sabiiti, the former Rukiga County Member of Parliament in Kashaki cell Mparo town council where he had gone to select his polling agents for today's polls.
Roland Tusiime Kamujanduzi, Byamukama's polling agent, says Kawaida was armed with a machete and stones during the attack and was in the company of two of his supporters only identified as Pajero and Ahmed.
Tusiime says Kawaida first blocked the road with hardcore stones to stop the victims who were riding on a motorcycle from fleeing. He says the attackers cut Byamukama several times on the head and pelted Ngabirano with stones on the head.
According to Tusiime, the attackers took off when their victims made alarm, which attracted residents. Residents rushed Byamukama and Ngabirano to Mparo health center IV while bleeding heavily.
A health worker at Mparo health center IV told our reporter on condition of anonymity that although Ngabirano is showing signs of improvement, arrangements are underway to refer Byamukama to Kabale Regional referral hospital for further management.
He explained that Byamukama sustained deep injuries on the head, which need a scan for better analysis. Kawaida denies accusations of attacking his rival, saying they are only aimed at tarnishing his image to discourage residents from voting for him.
John Mwaule, the Rukiga District Police Commander, says they have opened inquiries at Rukiga Police station under file number SD 03/24/07/2018.
