Two People Drown in Water Pond in Nakasongola

A Primary six pupil and his uncle have drowned in water pond at Sikye village in Nakasongola district.

The deceased were identified as Ibrah Lumu, 16, a primary six pupil at Wabinyonyi SDA Primary School and his uncle Ronald Kasaka, 23, both residents of Sikye village in Wabinyonyi sub-county.

Bernard Kamoga, the district councillor for Wabinyonyi sub-county explains that Lumu went to the pond to swim this afternoon, where he drowned. His uncle, who went to rescue him, was held by mud in the pond which was formerly a murram excavation site before the rains filled it with water.

Isah Ssemwogerere, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the bodies had been transferred to Nakasongola Health Center IV for postmortem. Later Nakasongola Police allowed the bereaved family to pick the bodies for burial.

The number of people who have died by drowning has now risen to ten in Nakasongola district in a period of two months.

Eight others who are all fishermen have drowned in Lake Kyoga after they went into the Lake to engage in fishing which was banned by Fisheries Protection Unit.

The latest victims are  Jimmy Odong and Eric Lumu Mukasa all fishermen at Kabasombwa landing site in Lwampanga sub-county. They drowned after their canoe was hit by heavy winds a week ago
