Two police officers attached to the Mineral Police in Namayingo District are nursing serious injuries after being assaulted by unknown machete-wielding men. The officers, identified as Moses Batuli and Isa Isabirye, had been deployed to guard Harmony Resources in Budde Village, Buyinja Sub-county, Namayingo District.

The duo, stationed at the main entrance to the mining site as standby officers, were reportedly ambushed by about two dozen machete-wielding men. The assailants disarmed the officers and gained access to sensitive areas of the gold processing facility.

Both officers sustained severe head injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at Victoria Hospital in Namayingo. Julius Katusiime, the Chief Operations Officer of Harmony Resources, said the attackers broke into the company’s stores and accessed sophisticated raw materials.

Katusiime informed police that the assailants stole carbon components used in gold extraction and processing, valued at Shs 200 million. The Busoga East police spokesperson, Michael Kafayo, confirmed the incident, noting that the injured officers are slowly responding to treatment.

Kafayo added that investigative teams have already inspected the crime scene and that inquiries are underway. He further called upon members of the general public to volunteer intelligence-related information to help track down the suspects.
