Two Suspected Thieves Lynched in Mayuge

Two unidentified men were on Tuesday afternoon lynched in Bukoli zone, in Magamaga town council, in Mayuge district, after being suspected of robbing valuables from unsuspecting passengers.

It is reported that the suspects are part of a gang of youths who waylay unsuspecting passengers along the Jinja-Iganga highway, largely in the areas of Kakira and Magamaga trading center.

Their trouble began when they camouflaged as passengers and stopped a motorcyclist, only to grab a handbag from the passenger on board and flee into hiding within the nearby Kakira sugarcane plantations.

This action caused an uproar along the highway, as motorcyclists and other well wishers alike mounted search for the suspects whom they later caught  andstoned to death.

The deceased have been taken to Mayuge health center IV mortuary awaiting postmortem.

One of the eyewitnesses, Francis Ayazika says that despite the traffic police presence within the blackspots along the Jinja-Iganga highway, suspected thieves rob passengers and flee into the surrounding sugarcane plantations.

"These youths operate in a gang of about eight and they normally surround motorcyclists, rob passengers and take refuge in thick sugarcane plantations, making it hard for the victims to trace  their whereabouts," he says.

Meanwhile, Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East police spokesperson implored residents to find measures of handing over suspects to police authorities for further prosecution, rather than undertaking mob Justice, which she says frustrates efforts of investigating criminal matters.
