The Fourth Division Court Martial has jailed two Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA rangers for the murder of a truck driver in Apaa.

Vincent Opiyo was shot dead from Layima Junction, Apaa Trading Center in Adjumani District on November 13th 2020 during a scuffle between him and a joint team of UPDF and UWA rangers.

Following the incident, the UWA rangers Morris Opiyo Taban and Lovis Opiyo were charged with murder and malicious damage respectively.

Lt. Col. George Nambafu, the Chairman Fourth Division Court Martial on Tuesday afternoon convicted the duo for the offences and later sentenced them accordingly.

Nambafu sentenced Morris Opiyo Taban to 10 years imprisonment for the murder case, while Lovis Opiyo was given a fine of Two Million Shillings or two years’ imprisonment.

According to Nambafu, the six months and 13 days that the convicts spent in remand shall be deducted from the jail sentence.

Earlier on, the prosecution led by Captain Augustine Tumwebaze asked the court for the maximum sentence to both convicts due to their negligence act and misuse of the guns given to them to protect lives. However, the defence lawyer Geoffrey Anyuru asked for a lighter and reformatory sentence since both convicts are first time offenders.

The family of the deceased who attended the court session expressed dissatisfaction following the judgement.

Maita Otim, the deceased brother says the court should have given the convicts heavy punishments since their acts were in-human.
