The United States Government has welcomed the renewal of a Cessation of Hostilities agreement between the Government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).
On November 1st, the Ugandan Government and the LRA renewed their commitment to a truce agreement first formulated in August this year. Both sides, meeting in the Southern Sudanese capital of Juba, also reiterated their dedication to finding a lasting solution to the 20-year war in northern Uganda.
In a news release, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, Sean McCormack, said the U.S. Government welcomes the development and urges adherence to the agreement as a step toward a peaceful solution to the LRA war. He said the United States will provide 90 million dollars this year in assistance to address the humanitarian crisis, peace initiatives, rehabilitation and development needs in northern Uganda.
