Silverbacks out of afrobasket games
The Uganda Men’s National Basketball team, Silverbacks, have been eliminated from the 2021 FIBA Afrobasket tournament. The team on Thursday was defeated by Cape Verde 79-71 in the quarter-finals at the Kigali Arena.

The Silverbacks who qualified for the quarter finals following their victory over giants Nigeria failed to outmatch a resilient Cape Verde.

Uganda started the game slowly, but Cape Verde took the lead to 8 points early, the Silverbacks tried pulling back a few points ending the first quarter 24-20 in favour of Cape Verde.

Adam Seiko and Eric Rwahirwe started the second quarter connecting from deep and Uganda took the lead, 26-24, however, the silverbacks failed to maintain their lead and surrendered several points to Cape Verde’s brilliant attacking force going to halftime trailing behind by eight points (43-35).

In the third quarter, Kieran Zziwa started off Uganda with two 3's and Ismail added another layup to cut the lead down, however they still failed to level the game. Despite several efforts from the silverbacks in the closing two quarters, the challenge was not enough to meet Cape and thus settling for a 71-79 defeat.

The silverbacks fell to Cape Verde’s Walter Tavares whose height “7.3” could not be outmatched by Uganda’s guards, although Okello tried to block his shots, he could not match with his height. Tavares ended up punishing the silverbacks with a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Silverbacks forward Arthur Kaluma turned up with a great performance again scoring a team-high 21 points, power forward Ishmail Wainright added 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Adam Seiko added 9 in their attempt to stop Cape Verde.

Although the Silverbacks had an impressive performance where they reached their first-ever quarter-final at the continental championship, their campaign was overshadowed by financial hardships that kept their games hanging in balance all time.

The loss to Cape Verde puts an end to Uganda’s impeccable performance throughout the tournament. The Silverbacks will now shift attention to the 2023 FIBA Afrobasket Qualifiers where they are drawn pit A against Nigeria, Mali and Cape Verde.
