The Uganda Law Society  has appealed to its members for assistance to settle medical bills for one of their colleagues  Lawyer Anthony Wameli.

Although it's not clear how much Wameli's bill is.Since September 2021, Wameli has been bedridden at Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts in the United States of America where he is currently battling stage four cancer.  Wameli, the head of the National Unity Platform's Legal Department had earlier been admitted in the same hospital during the month of June and July this year.

In a statement issued by the Uganda Law Society Council on Wednesday, the Council chaired by Pheona Wall Nabasa states that they have learnt that Wameli's long stay and treatment in the United States of America is very costly and has taken a toll on the family.

"We would like to extend our gratitude to the ULS members that have extended financial support towards his treatment through various platforms and groups. We however believe that as a membership, we can do more to support our member and his family during this trying time," reads the statement in part.

It adds that "it is for the above reason that ULS leadership would like to appeal to members to generously make a contribution towards Advocate Anthony Yeboah Wameli's treatment. All contributions will be handed to his family thereafter."

Speaking to Uganda Radio Network on phone, the ULS President Pheona Wall Nabasa says that prior to Wameli's sickness, he was one of the most active members of ULS and a champion for the rule of law.

As a result, Nabasa says that as ULS, they have sent a notice to their members via email and calling upon other well-wishers to support him.

According to Nabaasa, although she believes that Wameli is a strong and a prayerful person, he is at that critical stage when he needs much more care and support including keeping him in prayers to recover quickly.

Cue out: …they are welcome”. //

When we contacted Wameli to ask how much his bill is, he told our reporter that it’s not possible for him at the moment to respond to the question.

A few weeks ago,  Wameli  indicated that it was difficult to estimate how much has so far been spent and what is expected to be spent. He however hastened to add that one thing is for sure, that skyrocketing of the bill is expected.

On September 10 2021, the Uganda Law Society-ULS  named Wameli as the criminal defense lawyer of the year. The ULS Annual General Meeting also voted Wameli and Company Advocates, which employs eight Advocates as the law firm of the year.

Wameli, a Pastor at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya rose to the limelight in 2017 when he represented the suspects accused of murdering former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver, Godfrey Mambewa.

He is also the legal representative of Jamilu Mukulu, the alleged Supreme Commander  of the rebel Allied Democratic Forces-ADF that burnt to death about one hundred teenagers in their dormitory at Kichwamba Technical Institute in August 1998 and abducted and force recruited countless young people into the rebel army.

He also has instructions to represent suspects implicated in the murder of General Katumba Wamala’s daughter Brendah Nantongo and driver Harunah Kayondo, whom government also says are working under ADF.
