Uganda's Under 18 Basketball team will make a debut appearance at the Federation of International Basketball Association(FIBA) three on three (3x3) World Cup in Chengdu, China.

The Uganda men's team will be the only team representing Africa in the world event to be held this year from June 28 - July 2. Egypt meanwhile will send the only African women's team to the event.

Three on three Basketball is a new initiative by the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA)  to help make basketball a more versatile sport. The debut FIBA 3x3 World Championship was held in August 2012 in Athens, Greece.

Qatar was 20-12 winners over Brazil in the men's final at the fifth edition of the Under-18 competition played last year.

Uganda is drawn in Group D with Romania, Indonesia, Belgium and Kyrgyzstan. There are twenty men's teams and twenty women's teams in the tournament. In each of the eight pools of five, the top two teams will advance to a standard knockout round at the quarter finals.

Uganda, Bahrain and Kyrgyzstan are new comers and will have to bring in their best in the championship.

The selection of teams was based on the FIBA 3x3 Federation rankings of the ability of teams as well as the most active nations, and sports and development criteria.

The Uganda Under 18 team ranked 9th in the FIBA under 18 African championship held in 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.

Kampala International University Basketball Coach Hamza Nyambogo is currently training the players, expected to travel for the championship.
