The Uganda Women’s National Basketball, Gazelles team will not participate in the upcoming Women’s Afrobasket Qualifiers.   This was confirmed by the Federation President Nasser Sserunjoji.

“The Federation of Basketball Associations – FUBA has unfortunately made a difficult and painful decision to withdraw its participation from the Afrobasket qualifiers (women) that will take place between 12-17 July after having confirmed its participation to FIBA” reads a statement in the press release.

Sserunjoji pointed out the lack of funds to facilitate the team during the continental championship.

“The decision has been reached after failing to get the much needed financial support from the government. It is every athlete’s dream to compete at a continental championship like the Afrobasket and it is deplorable that Uganda will not take part in this year’s edition of the qualifiers,” Sserunjoji says.

According to Sserunjoji, the National team needed 213 Million Shillings for the qualifiers and 355 Million Shillings for the Women Afrobasket finals.

Uganda was due to play in the Zone Five event on July 12-17 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda. The Afrobasket finals will take place in Cameroon on September 17-26.

Sserunjoji had earlier submitted a budget of 1.6 Billion Shillings to the National Council of Sports to cater for three National teams. These include Gazelles, the national men’s basketball team, Silverbacks and U16 team.
