Uganda’s Middleweight boxer David Ssemujju is the latest to exit the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after losing to Algerian Yeounes Nemouchi in the middleweight category round of 32.

Ssemujju, lost by unanimous decision (5-0) despite the hard efforts he put in in the second round, Ssemujju had a slow start in the first round that gave his opponent much comfort. He had a good comeback in the second round but could not pull back the victory.

According to the Judges, Nemouchi won with score-cards reading 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 and 30-27, dashing Uganda’s hope of progressing to the next round.

“Eyes are wet for now but still strong-hearted let's Unite Together with emotions and pray for the hope, it isn’t done for Uganda, we got the last man standing, hard-luck champion”. Shadir Musa, team Captain briefly consoled Ssemujju.

Ssemujju who is a silver medallist in all African Games joins a list of Uganda’s Olympians who are already kicked out of the games, the first was Kathleen Noble who lost in the Repechage and there has no chance of winning any medal in the games. The other is Catherine Nanziri, a fellow boxer who lost on Sunday to Japan’s Sukimi Namiki during their women's fly (48-51kg) preliminaries boxing match at the Kokugikan Arena, Tokyo.

Uganda’s hope of a boxing medal now lays in team captain Shadir Musa Bwogi who will fight Georgia’s Eskekhan Madiev at the Kokugikan ring on Tuesday.

Bwogi was initially the only boxer from Uganda who had qualified for the Olympic Games after defeating Ghana’s Jessie Lartey in the welterweight African Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal. However, Nanziri and Ssemujju later joined him following the International Olympic Committee IOC Boxing Task Force arrangement of qualifying Fifty-three quota places basing on rankings.

The boxing team was part of the first contingent that left Uganda earlier last month to Izumisano.
