The stand poles erected along Katete Bridge in Mbarara city have collapsed destroying to vehicles in transit. Katete bridge connects Nyamitanga ward in Katete cell and Lugazi village in Kakoba ward in Mbarara City South Division.

The Shillings 24 million stand poles were constructed four months ago to prevent heavy trucks from using the bridge. Only vehicles carrying 6 tons are allowed to use the bridge.

Luka Taremwa, whose premio vehicle registration number UAZ 646R was damaged, blames the mess on shoddy work.

He says that a truck belonging to Ntugasaze company registration number UBH 242 J that was coming from the opposite side hit the top bar forcing the pole to collapse.

Happy Richard says he has been using the same bridge without any problem. He however, says that he heard something hit the top of his vehicle as he tried to cross on Thursday.

Richard faults the council for doing shoddy work noting that the bars, cement mixture and the sand were not fit for constructing such poles.

Richard Mugisha, the Mbarara City deputy clerk says they put up the poles to protect the bridge, which is supposed to be decommissioned.
