Power Distributors Umeme Limited, has unveiled
its 300 billion Shillings development plan for the 2020/2021 financial year.
Umeme MD, Selestino Babungi disclosed this while addressing journalists shortly
after inspecting the newly refurbished Shillings 2.6 billion Iganga-Bugiri power
line on Thursday.
He revealed that under the development plan, they intend to introduce
prepaid meters for over 180,000 customers throughout the country and increase
the number of transmitters in the newly created town councils and first
growing towns with dense populations.
Babungi says the projects are aimed at
boosting the country’s innovative youth who can best sustain their enterprises
through constant power supply.

Babungi asked communities to avoid vandalising electricity
installations, which he says frustrates efforts of expanding their client base
since they have to divert funds to refurbishment bills.
Speaking at the same gathering, Justine Lumumba Kasule, the Secretary
General of the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party, encouraged residents to start cottage projects to
create employment for the idle youthful population.
