The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through the RiamRiam Civil Network Society, has donated office equipment to the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) office of the UPDF 3rd Division Headquarters. The CIMIC office, which serves the Karamoja sub-region, was launched in September 2023 at the Moroto District headquarters.

On Tuesday, equipment including chairs, tables, a printer, and a computer set was delivered to the UPDF 3rd Division from the Moroto District headquarters. This donation is part of UNDP's commitment to enhancing the partnership between civilians and the military to promote peace and stability.

Yusuf Logiel, the Liaison and Monitoring Officer at the UNDP Moroto field office, highlighted the importance of supporting the CIMIC office. He noted that the office plays a crucial role in connecting the military with civilians, which has significantly contributed to peacebuilding. Logiel emphasized that strengthening this cooperation helps build trust and aligns both civilians and the military towards a common goal of peace and coexistence.

Logiel also mentioned plans to extend support to local police posts to aid in their duties and to partner with local governments in Kotido, Kaabong, and Moroto. These partnerships aim to involve key actors in conflict resolution, including youth, women, and security agencies, in mitigating conflict and promoting peace dialogue.

Maj Gen Don Nabasa, the UPDF 3rd Division Commander, praised the partners for their cooperation in maintaining peace in the region. He noted that while peace is gradually returning, there is still a need for a mindset change among the communities in Karamoja to appreciate the importance of peace and transformation.

Nabasa highlighted that the CIMIC office is actively engaging with the community and local leadership to drive this mindset change. He added that the newly received office equipment will enhance the office's operations and efficiency. The CIMIC office will continue to foster good relationships between the UPDF and the local population and address the community's pressing needs.

UNDP, in collaboration with KOICA, is also implementing a project called Building Resilience in Conflict-Affected and Fragile Communities of Karamoja (BRICK). This project aims to support government strategies in the region by improving livelihoods, building resilience, fostering social cohesion, and promoting peaceful coexistence among pastoral communities in the borderlands.
