At least eight Universities and six Research Institutions from Uganda and Kenya have entered into collaborative partnership with their Germany counterparts to improve the quality of research studies conducted in their institutions.

The partnership that was formalized at Muteesa I Royal University’s main campus in Masaka on Monday brings together Bugema, Ndejje, Makerere, Nkumba, Muteesa, Islamic University in Uganda, and Nairobi and Kisii Universities.

The other partner organizations are Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Wilsken Agencies, Economic Policy and Research Centre, African Union of Conservationists, Network for Education and Multidisciplinary Research, African Population and Health Research Centre and Leibniz Institute for Social Science among others.

According to Professor Vincent Kakembo, the Vice Chancellor Muteesa I Royal University, the partnership establishes a robust regional scientific research network that will enable them share knowledge and data for purposes of improving the quality of their research works.

Professor Kakembo explains that the network arises out of intensive training the different representatives of participating institutions have undergone in international research methodologies and data management processes by the Germany-based Volkswagen Stiftung-VW and GESIS-Leibniz Institute for Social Development.

Kakembo says they also intend to use the network as a platform to lobby for research funding as well facilitating co-supervision of their students for purposes of ensuring that their research compilations meet international standards.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between partners, the institutions have also agreed to put up a common research secretariat that will synchronize their research studies for easy reference by policy makers.

Dr. Paul Mukasa, the Research Director at Bugema University, says with their enhanced skills in research methodologies, the network will now produce qualified studies that will eventually inform policies that are relevant to improving communities in the region.

Professor Dr. Edward Bantu, the Dean of Research at Kisii University in Kenya is enthusiastic that the network is an opportunity to improve the operations of research and quality of learning in institutions of higher learning in the East African region.

He explains that research being a backbone to innovation and sharing of knowledge, the network will critically help the participating institutions to directly contribute to development of their countries through generating appropriate ideas that change people’s lives.
