Police are investigating reports that unidentified gunmen roam around Moroto
Regional Referral hospital staff quarters every evening. According to
information obtained by URN, the five intruders roam around the hospital quarters
with an AK-47 gun.
The presence of the gunmen has forced
health workers especially nurses to
suspend night duties after one of
them survived an attack. Dr. Ben Watmon, the
Director Moroto Regional
Referral Hospital, says that they are yet to establish the motive of
the gunmen.
“I have failed to understand the motive behind all
this because some of the staff are threatening to go back to their homes
because the situation is not good,” he said.
John Nangiro, one of the patients at Moroto Regional Hospital, says that he was supposed to receive treatment at
midnight but there was no nurse to attend to him in the ward.
“I
tried to call the nurse who was to give me treatment at night but she told me
to be patient that God was with me until morning. Indeed, she
came early morning to administer the treatment but still I missed the midnight
treatment,” he said.
Rose Lodou, another patient in the TB ward appealed to the government to step up the security of the health workers, saying many people are likely to die because nurses
fear to move from their homes to work at night.
Michael Longole, the Karamoja Region police spokesperson, says that the joint security team comprising the police and army
are investigating the matter.
“We received a concern from the hospital
administration about unknown armed men loitering around the hospital premises. We are already on the ground we will get them,”
he said.
Longole appealed for calm from the hospital staff, saying the security was on top of the
situation.
