Unlicensed, Fake Witchdoctors Overwhelm Aduku Town Council

Jimmy Uhuru, the LCI chairperson of Aduku Township cell says they are concerned on the growing numbers of the witch-doctors who migrate mainly from Masindi, Kiryandongo and Nakasongola districts and illegally settle in their area.

An influx of illegal witchdoctors from other districts is chocking the town council of Aduku in Kwania district.

Local leaders who describe the new witchdoctors as fake have claimed that their hands are tied as the high demand for witchcraft services has reportedly overwhelmed the local, licensed witchdoctors in the area.

In January last year, local leaders of Aduku Town Council in Kwania district launched an operation to crack down on fake witchdoctors. However, the operation code named “Jwayo Tim Jojok”, meaning weeding out witchcraft activities did not bear fruits.

The leaders claim that about 16 witch-doctors illegally operating in the area were arrested and handed over to police but were later released unconditionally and instead their numbers have continued to rise.

Jimmy Uhuru, the LCI chairperson of Aduku Township cell says they are concerned on the growing numbers of the witch-doctors who migrate mainly from Masindi, Kiryandongo andNakasongola districts and illegally set up shrines and start operating in their area.

He said his court is always busy with witchcraft-related cases adding that they are equally concerned over the numbers of people seeking assistance from these witch doctors especially women who end up in the traps of these opportunistic fake witch-doctors.

He cited an incident on Friday when his office registered a complaint from one Middy Atino, a resident of Alany cell in Aduku Town Council who was conned off 110,000 shillings by a witchdoctor when she sought help after losing  her pig.

Although the witch doctors have now resorted to pinning their posters on different public and private places at night as a way of advertising their businesses, Uhuru noted that they attempts to have them arrested have hit not succeeded.

Uhuru said the operation of these fake witch doctors has jeopardized security and caused a hike in domestic violence cases.

Peter Otim, the Secretary Youth Affairs at the Diocese of West Lango and also a resident of Aduku Township cell, condemned the operations of the witch doctors in the area asking the public to stay away from them as a way of promoting peace and love in their families.

Kwania District Police Commander Edith Basalirwa says, “There is nothing we can do with those witch-doctors, I know there have been some operation by the local leaders but I told them the law is very clear because those witch-doctors have licensees."
