Uganda People’s Congress(UPC) party President Jimmy Akena has started grassroots mobilization of the party in Kisoro district .

Akena told our reporter on Thursday that he is traversing all areas in Kisoro district mobilizing support for the party ahead of the 2026 elections. Akena says that Museveni is campaigning as well as analyzing the political ground for the coming general elections because he is aware the PDM program is not progressing. Museveni is currently in eastern Uganda assessing the progress of the PDM program that is aimed at helping the poor get out of poverty.

He says that PDM cannot prosper better than cooperative societies that the ruling government deliberately undermined and destroyed to reduce UPC party influence in communities.

Akena also says that during the mobilization as well as registering new members, he will also sensitize people on how to live a life outside confined land to prevent the projected crisis of land shortage in the area.

//Cue in: “in Kisoro and….

Cue out: …sustain themselves.”/

Akena’s presence in Kisoro comes at a time when the party is struggling for support in the area.

In the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament by-election last month, UPC party Candidate Meble Ingabire received only 362 votes and lost to Independent candidate Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, who garnered 50,459 votes.

Ingabire argued that the one-week campaign period scheduled by the Electoral Commission was not enough. She explained that the limited time made it difficult for her to traverse all areas of Kisoro District to garner support.    But, during the election of the flag bearer, UPC members were left divided protesting the fronting of Ingabire and dropping Suzan Natukunda, a student at Metropolitan International University.

After being dropped, Natukunda declined to support Ingabire and announced her support to Aisha Chimpaye of the People’s Progressive (PPP) Party.
