Police in Tororo district are holding John Okumu, a Uganda People's Defense Forces-UPDF deserter and resident of Kisoti village in Mwello sub-county, for illegal possessing of a firearm and live ammunition. Okumu was apprehended at his home in Kisote North village following a tip-off.

A search of his premises led to the recovery of a firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition. According to Bernard Obbo, the LC3 Chairperson of Mwello Sub-county, Okumu has a history of troubling behavior in the area and is known for his mysterious travels.

Obbo criticized the district security committee for failing to take action against Okumu, even after his brothers reported his possession of a firearm. Payasi Opio, the LC3 Chairperson of Nagongera Sub-county, emphasized the importance of monitoring army deserters, as they pose a significant security threat.

He urged residents to report any suspicious activity, especially if they encounter deserters using threatening language. Moses Odell, the LC III chairperson of Pajwenda Town Council, called on local leaders to form security committees to address such threats.

The suspect is currently being held at Tororo Central Police Station, according to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South Regional police spokesperson.
