According to Bernard Obbo, the LC3 Chairperson of Mwello Sub-county, Okumu has a history of troubling behavior in the area and is known for his mysterious travels.
Police
in Tororo district are holding John Okumu, a Uganda People's Defense Forces-UPDF deserter and resident
of Kisoti village in Mwello sub-county, for illegal possessing of a firearm and live ammunition. Okumu
was apprehended at his home in Kisote North village following a tip-off.
A
search of his premises led to the recovery of a firearm and 30 rounds of
ammunition. According to Bernard Obbo, the LC3 Chairperson of Mwello
Sub-county, Okumu has a history of troubling behavior in the area and is known
for his mysterious travels.
Obbo
criticized the district security committee for failing to take action against
Okumu, even after his brothers reported his possession of a firearm. Payasi
Opio, the LC3 Chairperson of Nagongera Sub-county, emphasized the importance of
monitoring army deserters, as they pose a significant security threat.
He urged
residents to report any suspicious activity, especially if they encounter
deserters using threatening language. Moses
Odell, the LC III chairperson of Pajwenda Town Council, called on local leaders
to form security committees to address such threats.
The suspect is currently
being held at Tororo Central Police Station, according to Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi
South Regional police spokesperson.
