Police in Kiruhura have detained a Uganda People’s Defense forces-UPDF Corporal Steven Mutamba on charges of animal theft.

Mutamba and another identified as Nyombe are alleged to have stolen 14 bulls which were on Thursday recovered at the farm belonging to Mutamba.

Sources indicate that the Mutamba has been working closely with Nyombe to steal animals that he would later sell off. The two were picked on Thursday after information leaked that the missing animals were actually at their farm.

Rwizi regional Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says that the two are being held at Sanga police station pending investigations into the matter.

The animals in question have also been confiscated by the police. Kasasira says that the district has been battling animal thieves for a long time with some of them managing to transport the animals to as far as Kampala and Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC.

Johnson Habeneza, a resident of Sanga says that the thieves have been targeting animals mainly bulls which they sell off to butchers at high prices.
