UPDF Soldier Shoots Himself Dead

Captain Joseph Maada, the 303 Brigade Counter Intelligence Officer told Uganda Radio Network that the reason Kalyango committed suicide is still being investigated since he did not have any misunderstanding with his colleagues in the barracks.

A Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF Soldier has shot himself dead.

The deceased has been identified as Corporal Wilson Kalyango 40 attached to the 13th Battalion. 

The incident happened in the early hours of Monday morning just before 5.00am at Nyakasene village Buseruka Sub county Hoima district. 

Captain Joseph Maada, the 303 Brigade Counter Intelligence Officer in an interview with Uganda Radio Network explained that the deceased UPDF officer disappeared four days ago together with his gun from their Barracks in Kabaale Buseruka sub county of Hoima district under unclear circumstances, adding that they have been hunting for him. 

 

He says this Morning, residents in the area heard a gunshot and later reported to Kabaale UPDF Detach that a body of a UPDF officer was found lying in a pool of blood near Nyakasenene Catholic church in Kabaale parish. 

UPDF officers rushed to the scene and discovered Kalyango had shot himself dead. He shot himself in the neck and died instantly. His gun was also found lying by his side at the crime scene.

“We recovered the gun that he used to shoot himself, cartridge and the magazine, ” said Maada. 

Maada says the reason as to why Kalyango committed suicide is still subject to investigations since he did not have any misunderstanding with his colleagues in the Barracks.

By press time the body was still lying at the crime scene as arrangements were being made to have it taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem and later \transport it to his home district in Kagadi for Burial.

The incident comes barely a month after another soldier attached to Masindi Artillery division accidentally shot himself dead.   

The deceased was identified as Lance Corporal Simon Peter Bongomin, 32, attached to the barracks military police training wing.   

The incident happened October 15,2020 inside the deceased's house situated within the Masindi UPDF Artillery barracks.    

It was reported that Bongomin was picking a loaded and cocked gun at his house to go for duty when the tragedy occurred.  

In the process of picking the gun, a bullet came out and hit him in the neck killing him instantly.
