A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier has shot his wife to death in Makindye military barracks and later committed suicide.

Col Deo Akiiki, the deputy UPDF Spokesperson, has identified the soldier as Corporal Collins Andebo while the deceased has been identified as Peroni Aturinda.

“The lady did not die instantly but she later succumbed to the wounds which she sustained on the arms. These two have been having issues where our political commissar in the barracks tried to intervene until today early morning when he killed his wife and then killed himself,” Col Akiiki said.

Makindye barracks is located in Lusaka zone, Makindye Division, in Kampala. The barracks also fall under Katwe policing division. UPDF said Cpl Andebo was guarding a minister’s home from where he escaped with a gun and killed his wife.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said Aturinda was also working as a support staff in the military barracks. “It is alleged that this morning at approximately 7 am, Corporal Andebo Collins, armed with an AK-47 rifle and dressed in civilian attire, confronted Aturinda Peroni as she was boarding a motorcycle (boda-boda). He opened fire on her, resulting in her sustaining a shattered arm,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

Cpl Andebo died on the spot after shooting himself in the mouth while Aturinda was declared dead upon arrival at Nsambya Hospital's casualty ward. UPDF and Police have said that the couple had reached a point of separation because of endless domestic misunderstandings.

Aturinda and Cpl Andebo’s bodies were taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. So far, detectives have established that the couple’s relationship woes had taken more than five years.

“The team has since established that the duo had a history of relationship issues spanning approximately five years. Notably, the alleged killer's firearm was recovered, along with 13 cartridges from the scene,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.

However, UPDF and the Police have started conducting a comprehensive investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. By press time, police had recorded several statements from witnesses to aid in the investigation.

On Sunday, a police trainee Mercy Olowo stabbed her prison lover Wilfred Okori to death inside Luzira Prisons. Olowo who is currently detained at Jinja Road police division stabbed Okori after he threw her belongings outside their house for unknown reasons.
