A Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier attached to Bombo army barracks has been shot in the chest while attempting to rob a businessman in Nyendo town, Masaka municipality.

Corporal Vincent Ndibarekera (number 11754) was shot by police on Sunday night at around 11:00pm in Nyendo town. Although his civilian accomplice Clement Samula immediately surrendered, the wounded Ndibarekera managed to flee the scene.

He was later arrested by police on Monday afternoon sheltering in a makeshift hideout and taken to Masaka referral hospital.

The Southern Police Spokesman, Noah Sserunjogi says Corporal Vincent Ndibarekera and his colleague Clement Samula waylaid Denis Mukasa, a businessman from Lambu landing site in Bukakata sub-county, and tried to rob him of 2 million shillings.

Sserunjogi said that on seeing the police, Vincent Ndibarekera drew a toy pistol prompting the policemen to open fire and shoot him in the chest. His colleague Clement Samula was arrested.

Police has taken the toy pistol to Masaka central police as an exhibit.

Corporal Vincent Ndibarekera is admitted at Masaka referral hospital nursing his wounds while Clement Samula is held at Masaka central police.

Sserunjogi says he has informed the UPDF commanders about the incident and investigations are on-going.

He added that if Ndibarekera recovers, he will be charged with robbery  with his accomplice Vincent Samula.

Masaka Referral Hospital Medical superintendant, Dr. Florence Gumusiriza said that Corporal Vincent Ndibarekera is under intensive care and but should make a good recovery.
