URA Closes 12 Businesses in Kabale Over Tax

Uganda Revenue Authority-URA has closed 12 business entities in Kabale Municipality over accumulated tax arrears. 

The affected businesses include Little Litz Hotel that belongs to Christopher Mulenga, the Kabale District National Resistance Movement (NRM) party treasurer, Bunyonyi View Hotel that belongs to Didan Kahinda Atukunda, Tugyeineyo and Sons Company limited belonging to Jackson Tugeineyo, Siraji Milo Celeb Sounds belonging to Edward Milo and Taifa Enterprises limited.

Others are GJ properties limited, KAP suppliers Uganda Limited, Star dealings limited, Kadio hotel, Hotel Home Again, Interscope Consult Group limited and Hope Preparatory School.

Tonny Stephine Omuka, the Supervisor Debt Collection Legal Department under Uganda Revenue Authority, says the affected businesses have failed to remit Value Added Tax (VAT), Income tax and Rental income tax for the last two years.

Omuka says the closed businesses were served several notices reminding them to clear their outstanding tax arrears in vain. He cites Christopher Mulenga, the proprietor of Little Litz hotel who owes the tax body more than Shillings 122 million.

Louis Tumusiime, the Kabale District Uganda Revenue Authority Compliance Officer, says the operation is intended to improve on voluntary tax compliance. He says the affected businesses will only be allowed after clearing the tax arrears.

Christopher Mulenga, one of the affected businessmen declined to comment on the matter.
