A valley dam worth 13 million shillings aimed at providing water to Teso and Karamojong pastoral communities residing in the semi-arid districts of Moroto and Amuria districts has been commissioned in Amaseniko Kapelebyong County, in Amuria district.
Tukum dam, was commissioned on Saturday in a traditional ceremony which was witnessed by representatives from the Teso Initiative for Peace [TIP], Omanimani Community Development initiative for peace [OCODI]; Christian International Peace service [CHIPS] in partnership with German Development Service [ded] and world Food program [WFP].
A black bull was slaughtered at the dam and a cleansing ceremony aimed at creating harmony between the Karamojong and the Iteso was performed by four elders from both Teso and Karamoja who sprinkled blood at the dam.
The Teso Initiative for Peace coordinator, Stephen Makumbi, said the commsioning of the dam should mark an end to all differences between the two communities.

The dam is one of the eight valley dams in Amuria and Moroto districts, whose construction is being financed by the World Food Programme (WFP) and German agency for technical development (GTZ).
