The Uganda Virus Research Institute-UVRI has confirmed a measles outbreak in Apac district.

Two weeks ago, four residents of Ibuje and Akokoro Sub Counties, were rushed to Apac hospital after they developed signs and symptoms of measles. Their blood samples were subsequently taken to UVRI for testing.

Dr Leone Oceng, the Acting Apac District Health Officer, says that the district received the positive specimen from UVRI.

He says the four patients who are currently admitted at Apac hospital have since improved.

Dr Oceng says that the district is yet to embark on the mass immunization campaign against measles for children under the age of five.

Last month, the government announced measles outbreak in Oyam, Ntoroko, Mayuge and Apac districts. Prior to that, measles had also been reported in 26 districts across the country.

Measles also known as rubella is a viral infection of the respiratory system and a contagious disease that can spread through contact with infected mucus and saliva.
