A severe water crisis has hit Logiri Health Center III in Arua district, putting the lives of patients and medical workers at risk. The worst affected units are the maternity ward and the laboratory.

The facility currently lacks running water for its operations following the breakdown of the only motorized borehole nearly four months ago.

Michael Ejidra, the health worker in charge of the facility says that the health center has not had any running water since June leaving them with no option but to go to the nearby Wariki stream.

According to Ejidra, although the facility has been relying on rainwater harvesting, the current rainfall pattern has been unreliable, thereby compromising hygiene at the facility.

Grace Asone, who is attending to a patient at the maternity ward says that they often risk their lives to go to the neighboring Wariki stream to look for water in cases of emergencies at night.

“The water problem at the facility is real. There is no water and we normally go to fetch water at night becasue the maternity ward lacks water”, she said.

Faidah Bako, another patient at the facility notes that another patient survived death after she was knocked by a speeding vehicle at night near Wariki bridge where she had gone to fetch water. She has however appealed to the district leaders to intervene in the matter.

John Bosco Odama, the Logiri Sub County Chairperson says expectant mothers at the facility are most hit by the water scarcity, which has forced some to work for more than a kilometer in search of a clean water source.

But Alfred Okuonzi, the LCV Chairperson Arua says that they are aware of the underlying water scarcity and its implication at the facility. Okuonzi notes that he has directed the water officer to find out the root cause of the water challenge such that appropriate action can be taken.
