The Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF engineering brigade is waiting for Makerere University to advance them money to pave way for the completion of the indoor stadium.

Construction of the indoor stadium aka Mak Arena stalled in September last year due to lack of funds.

Brig Eng. Timothy Sabiiti Mutebile, the head of UPDF Engineering brigade, says they will resume work once they receive funding from the university.

“We shall resume anytime soon when we are advanced money. We work with funds forward and we are still waiting for Makerere to honor the promise,” Brig Eng Mutebile told URN in a phone interview.

Last week, Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe told URN last week that only Shillings 1.5 billion of the Shillings 5.57bn advanced by government for the facility last year is left.

“We did a review just to see how best to spend the balance we have. And find it is enough to complete the job,” Nawangwe said.

Nawangwe expressed desire by the institution to change the original design of the indoor stadium to increase the number seats from the originally planned 3000-seater facility.         But Eng. Brig Mutebile says although there are proposed changes, their contract is to deliver the facility based on the original design.

“There are some few changes. But for the meantime, we agreed that we continue constructing based on the original design then, the changes will come later,” he said.

The Mak Arena hosted the 3rd World University Netball Championships between September 17th and 21st 2018 despite being incomplete.

Prof. Nawangwe says the institution needs the facility and hopes the army will resume construction soon.
