A consortium of Non-Governmental Organizations in West Nile has launched bids for the 2024 Integrity Awards in the region. The NGOs, under their umbrella organization West Nile Civil Society Network (WECISNET), during a media engagement on Tuesday, revealed that the award is aimed at incentivizing integrity in public service delivery to combat corruption.

Started in 2016 by Action Aid International Uganda, the National Integrity Awards have since gained popularity in the country, drawing on board Civil Society organizations from all regions. The regional winners will then go for national vetting for the national awards on December 4th, 2024, in Kampala.

Twaib Feni, the Executive Director of the West Nile Civil Society Network, said this year, they have given a month for the public to nominate candidates for the awards and will do more sensitization to ensure that the whole process is transparent and well understood. According to Feni, three winners will be selected by a vetting committee, of which at least one should be a woman.

According to Teopista Onzia, the Team Leader for Community Empowerment for Peace and Development (CEPAD) West Nile, the awards held previously have helped instill some level of discipline and honesty in public offices.

Last year, several prominent persons in West Nile, among them Dr. William Worodria of Mulago Hospital, Josephine Angucia, the former Police PRO West Nile, and Hon. Kasiano Wadri, former MP of Arua Municipality, were successfully nominated and selected for the Integrity Awards.

But the overall integrity winner for 2023 was Professor Balunywa Waswa, the then Principal for Makerere Business School (MUBS), for revolutionizing business education and spearheading the private students’ scheme in Uganda.
