Police in Kaliro have arrested a 20-year-old woman for attempted infanticide.

Phiona Nabakoza, is accused of dumping her newly born baby into a pit latrine.

Sarah Mbeiza, one of the residents of Kaliro town, says suspicion was sparked off shortly after the girl who has been pregnant was seen roaming around the town without the baby.

The residents alerted the local authorities, who in turn brought the matter to the attention of the police, leading to the girl’s arrest.

On interrogation, the girl admitted that she gave birth successfully, but decided to dump the baby into a pit latrine because the baby’s father, Philip Ogwanyi, refused to take full responsibility of the baby and mother’s needs.

Nabakoza and her lover lived in Nkondo viilage- Kidera Sub County in the newly created Buyende District. She says that the man turned rowdy and chased him from his home saying that the child she was carrying in her womb was not his.

The visibly shameful and nervous Nabakooza, confessed that prior to the birth of her child, she contemplated aborting, but was scared about the grave consequences of abortion.

Jackson Kassozi, the criminal investigations officer, Kaliro, says police struggled for more than one hour to retrieve the baby from the pit latrine, located In the Industrial area in Kaliro Town council.

The baby was found alive and was rushed to Kwesiga-Mirembe clinic in Kaliro town for medical attention.

Nabakooza is detained at Kaliro police station waiting to be taken to court to answer charges of negligence and attempted murder.
