Samuel Mpanimanya, the Child’s father, says the news of the theft of his child found him at his work place in Masindi district. He is happy now that the baby has been found alive.
Hoima police are holding a woman accused of
stealing a 1-year-old baby. The suspect is Rehema Niwandinda, a resident of
Lukasa Upper cell Kahoora division Hoima Municipality in Hoima district.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson told
Uganda Radio Network on Monday that Nuwadinda allegedly stole the baby from Lukasa
on Tuesday last week and disappeared with her to unknown destination.
The
child belongs to Brucilla Nabwami and Samuel Mpanimanya, both residents of
Ishaka Kijungu in Kahoora division Hoima town. The minor was with her
grandmother, Amina Tibasiima when she was stolen.
Hakiza says the suspect first befriended the baby’s grandmother
for some days since they are neighbors and could at times move freely with the baby.
He explains that on Tuesday, the suspect convinced
the baby’s grandmother around 9am to let her go with the baby to Hoima town,
which she unknowingly accepted.
Hakiza says Tibasiima became suspicious after
waiting for the suspect to return with her grandchild in vain.
She informed
other neighbors who joined the search for the duo in vain. According to Hakiza,
the child’s father filed a case at Hoima central police station.
This prompted Flying squad operatives to swing
into action to hunt for the suspect.
Nuwadinda was arrested in Katanabirwa
trading center in Kyankwanzi district on Sunday evening where she was found
with the child.

Hakiza said residents of Katanabirwa also got suspicious when
they saw the woman breast feeding the baby yet she didn’t have any milk. He
says the suspect will appear in court on charges of baby theft.
