A buffalo has killed a farmer and wounded another in Mutunda Sub County in Kiryandongo district.

Sylvester Mafabi, a resident of Mutunda village died on Wednesday afternoon in Kimogora ranches, along the Nile River valley. Mafabi was laid to rest with assistance from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

The identity of the wounded farmer could not be obtained by URN and the attacking buffalo disappeared into the wild.

Richard Muhabwe, the UWA warden in charge of Karuma Conservation area, says the farmer was attacked to death by a buffalo suspected to have been wounded by poachers.

Muhabwe says the residents were clearing their plantation when the animal charged at them. He says poaching within Kimogora government ranches and farming activities threaten the survival of elephants and buffaloes in the area.

According to Muhabwe, the poachers and encroachers are from as far as Apac and other neighbouring districts. He says their last monitoring surveillance sighted just 16 buffaloes in a herd.

In December 2015, another stray buffalo attached and wounded one person in Lagaji village, Pabit in Purongo Sub-county, Nwoya district. Eighteen-year-old Nelson Onen was treated at Anaka Hospital. He had gone to harvest sim-sim from his garden on the fringes of Murchison Falls National Park when the attack happened.

In December 2014, another attack by stray buffaloes left a 60-year-old woman dead. Hellen Aparo was a resident of Pamin Olango village Latoro Parish in Purongo sub county, Nwoya district.

In 2014, six people were killed by stray animals from Murchison Falls National Park.
