Zanzibar have stormed the finals of the 2017 regional Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after a hard fought 2-1 win over a 10-man Uganda Cranes.

After both teams missing scoring chances early in the first 20 minutes, the impressive Zanzibar team responded five minutes later with the opening goal at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu.

Hassan Makame made no mistake connecting in Abass Yahya's beautiful cross. Uganda's coach Moses Basena made a quick change bringing on Joseph Nsubuga for Shafiq Bakaki after 28 minutes.

On 30 minutes Derrick Nsibambi leveled matters with his fourth goal of the tournament after a good Allan Kyambade cross.

Later in the second half Uganda's earlier substitute Nsubuga was shown a red card and Zanzibar  awarded a penalty kick. Seif Ahmed Adeyum made no mistake beating goalkeeper Ismeal Watenga from the spot to make it 2-1.

The 14-time record winners Uganda tried to fight back but failed to penetrate the Zanzibar defending line.

On Sunday hosts Harambee Stars of Kenya will battle Zanzibar in the final, while Uganda face Burundi in the play-off for third place.

Apart from Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan, this year's Championship has attracted Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi and guests Libya.
